The Great Debate: Shaping Roanoke's Future

On September 15, 2022, all Roanoke City Council Candidates were invited to gather at the esteemed Bethany Christian Church in Roanoke, VA to participate in a momentous public forum. Out of the 11 cabdidates, 9 attended. The event, aptly titled “The Great Debate, sought to provide a platform for the candidates to address pressing questions that directly impact the local communities, businesses, schools, families, and the long-term economic growth and development of future generations.

Under the guidance of Pastor Kevin McNeil, who graciously hosted the event, Moderators Michael Anderson Public Relations Officer with the Virginia Diverse Chamber of Commerce and Eric Sparrow VP Executive Committee of the Virginia Diverse Chamber of Commerce,  the forum aimed to foster a constructive and inclusive environment where candidates could articulate their visions, policies, and plans for the betterment of Roanoke. The event spanned three hours, from 6 PM to 9 PM, allowing ample time for candidates to delve into the critical issues facing the city.

Recognizing the diverse and vibrant tapestry of Roanoke, the candidates were urged to address topics that resonated with the local residents. The forum focused on issues such as affordable housing, healthcare accessibility, transportation infrastructure, job creation, racial and social equity, education, and environmental sustainability. By directly engaging with these topics, the candidates aimed to shape a Roanoke that is inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable for all its citizens.

Beyond the traditional format, the event also incorporated interactive elements to foster a deeper engagement between the candidates and the audience moderated by Damon Davis Chamber Executive Committee member. Attendees were encouraged to submit questions both prior to the forum and in real-time during the event. This facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas, allowing the candidates to directly respond to the concerns and aspirations of the community they aimed to serve.
“The Great Debate” served as a platform for the candidates to not only share their individual visions but also explore opportunities for collaboration.
